The Japanese Flowering Cherry ‘Fukubana’ (Prunus × subhirtella ‘Fukubana’) is a small ornamental tree particularly valued for its abundant pink blossom in early spring. From March to April, its branches are covered with numerous carmine-red buds that open into bright pink semi-double flowers, with slightly notched petals.
Its upright, gradually rounded habit makes it an elegant tree that fits easily into many gardens. It can be planted as a specimen tree on a lawn, in a mixed border or in a smaller ornamental garden. At maturity, it generally reaches around 4 to 6 metres in height and 3 to 4 metres in width.
After flowering, dark green foliage develops. In autumn, the leaves turn attractive shades of yellow, orange and red, providing a second season of interest before they fall.
‘Fukubana’ prefers a sunny position and grows well in most garden soils, provided they are reasonably well drained. Very hardy, it is well suited to temperate European climates and tolerates cold winters once established.
It is easy to maintain and mainly requires regular watering during the first few years after planting. Pruning is generally unnecessary, apart from removing dead, damaged or badly positioned branches after flowering.
