Red maple is best for large gardens with moisture-retentive, preferably acidic soil that does not dry out. In those conditions it grows quickly and can develop spectacular autumn colour, from orange-yellow to scarlet. We would use it as a shade or avenue tree. On dry or calcareous ground, both growth and autumn colouring are usually much less convincing.

Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is a fast-growing ornamental tree appreciated for its elegant shape and spectacular autumn colours. The foliage develops vivid shades of scarlet, orange and crimson, making it one of the most decorative maples for seasonal colour.
During spring, the tree also produces attractive red flowers before leaf emergence, adding additional ornamental interest early in the season. Its fresh green summer foliage provides light shade and a graceful appearance throughout the year.
Acer rubrum is well suited to parks, avenues and large gardens. It prefers fresh, slightly acidic soils and performs particularly well in temperate climates with sufficient soil moisture.
