SAA Pieper American Persimmon Tree is a pure Diospyros virginiana variety, producing abundant crops of small persimmons with a powerful and distinctive rum-like aroma. Its flavour profile is quite different from Asian persimmons (Diospyros kaki), making it especially interesting for collectors and fruit enthusiasts.
The fruit is particularly suited to lovers of rich aromatic flavours, and can be excellent for desserts, pastries and preparations where its natural rum-like perfume can be appreciated.
SAA Pieper is an astringent persimmon variety, meaning the fruit must be eaten fully soft, dried, or treated after harvest to remove astringency. This variety can take longer than average to lose its astringency, so full ripening is important before consumption.
The harvest period is early to mid-season, generally from September to November depending on climate and growing conditions. The tree is quick to come into production and is considered easy to grow.
As a pure American persimmon, SAA Pieper is extremely hardy and better able to tolerate late frosts than many non-American persimmon varieties. It is well adapted to colder regions and mountain climates, while still benefiting from a warm, sunny and sheltered position for best fruit ripening.
Our SAA Pieper persimmon trees are produced in different forms and on different rootstocks, including Diospyros lotus for broad soil adaptation and quick establishment, and Diospyros virginiana for improved tolerance to very dry or very wet soil conditions.
