Saint Lucie Cherry Rootstock (Prunus mahaleb) is a vigorous cherry rootstock widely appreciated for its excellent adaptation to dry, calcareous and poor soils. It is commonly used for sweet cherry cultivation in regions where stronger rooting and drought tolerance are required.
Compared with more vigorous rootstocks such as wild cherry seedlings, Prunus mahaleb generally produces slightly smaller and more manageable trees while maintaining good productivity and orchard longevity.
This rootstock is particularly valued for traditional orchards and difficult growing conditions thanks to its strong root system and good tolerance to limestone-rich soils. It performs best in well-drained soils and sunny positions.
