Good pruning works with the natural growth of a fruit tree rather than simply cutting it back hard. Each intervention is adapted to the species, age and objective: training, rebalancing, renewing fruiting wood or maintaining an older tree. Thoughtful pruning improves light and access to the crop. Dangerous or severely declining trees may require a separate assessment before work begins.
