M9 is the most widely-planted dwarf apple rootstock, and is an ideal choice for growing apple trees in gardens, or where space is limited.

Apple trees grafted on M9 rootstock crop from an early age, and can have enhanced fruit size.

M9 produces a dwarf apple tree with a mature height of up to 2.5m. The trees will require permanent staking or support.

Trees grafted on M9 can be planted 2m apart.

M9 is an excellent rootstock for producing small bush-trained apple trees, spindlebushes, and oblique cordons.

History

Rootstocks have been used for hundreds of years, but it was not until the start of the 20th century that researchers at the East Malling research station in England started to categorise them systematically. M9 was one of the original rootstocks classifed at East Malling. Although we tend to think of it as a modern commercial rootstock, it is actually very old, and was known in France in the 19th century as Jaune de Metz - a reference to the dull golden sheen that you sometimes see on the bark of this rootstock. As such it is a good choice if you are intending to establish a 19th century period-correct orchard.
