Marguerite Marillat is the pear to choose for genuinely impressive fruit without sacrificing eating quality. Individual pears may approach 700 g, with fine, melting, juicy, sweet and aromatic flesh. They remain delicate and tolerate handling poorly. As a triploid cultivar, it does not pollinate other pear trees effectively. Possible incompatibility with quince rootstocks should also be anticipated when choosing the tree.

Description

Marguerite Marillat is a traditional pear raised by Mr Marillat, a nurseryman from the Lyon area of south-east France in the 1870s. It is named after his wife.

This is not the most attractive-looking of pears – they are usually a bit mis-shapen – but they make up for it with their melting juicy sweet flesh, and large size.

Marguerite Marillat is quite easy to grow and is usually a regular bearer.
