Chantecler is a very attractive French apple, with a golden yellow skin and often a light orange flush.

The flesh has a fine light texture, and is quite soft.  The flavour is mild, basically sweet, but with some acidity.

The apples are quite large, and ripen late in the season.  They keep well.

Chantecler is grown commercially in France and is often available in supermarkets.

History

Chantecler is also sometimes spelled Chanteclerc and is sold under the Belchard brand. It is a variety obtained by INRA in Angers and was listed in the catalog in 1977 as one of the best varieties of the time.
