  • Self-fertility: Self-fertile
  • Pollinating others: Poor

Issai is a self-fertile smooth-skinned kiwi. It is capable of producing very large crops.

Smooth-skinned kiwis can be eaten like apples - without having to remove the skin, which makes this type of kiwi ideal for packing as a snack for days out.

Growing and Training

Issai is self-fertile and can be planted without a separate polleniser, however another male kiwi of the species Actinidia arguta planted nearby will improve the number of fruits. (Note that male kiwis do not produce fruits).

As with all kiwis, plant Issai in a sheltered location, where it has space and support to grow. It is however one of the more hardy kiwi varieties.

It will need simple winter and summer pruning each year, and make sure it has plenty of water.
