Hayward remains the standard cultivar for producing the familiar large green kiwifruit. The fruit has good flavour, generous size and excellent storage ability after harvest. The trade-offs are a very vigorous vine and late ripening, requiring a warm sheltered position and strong training system. Hayward is female and needs a suitable male such as Tomuri nearby.

Hayward is one of the most popular of the fuzzy or large-fruited kiwis – the kind you usually find on sale in supermarkets. This species is twice the size of the smooth-skinned species, but the rough skin is not edible and the fruits are usually peeled before eating.
