This variety was developed around 1825 by Jacques Lebel, a nurseryman in the town of Amiens in northern France. It is quite widely grown in northern France.
The large flat-round apples are predominantly green, but often with an orange flush. They ripen in late August / early September, and can be used immediately or stored until Christmas.
The flesh is crisp, with a juicy sweet / sharp acidity and a high vitamin C content.
Jacques Lebel is primarily a cooking apple, with a notably high pectin content, and ideal for jams and preserves.
