The potent spicy flavours of all quinces are best tamed by cooking, however Muskatnaja is unusual in that it can also be eaten raw. Even so, don’t try to eat it like an apple – it is best to slice the flesh thinly and taste a slice at a time, or add the slices to a fresh fruit salad.
Our Variety Assessment
Its strengths, growing requirements and the conditions in which it performs best.
Muskatnaja suits growers interested in exceptionally aromatic quinces, in a sunny position where the fruit can ripen fully. We recommend it for versatility: its musky, spicy fragrance is excellent in cooked recipes, while the flesh can be tasted raw in very thin slices. Its main limitation is that fresh-eating quality depends heavily on complete ripeness.
