Quetsche d'Alsace is an example of a Quetsche or Zwetchen plum, known in central Europe since the 17th century, and excellent for use in the kitchen.
The plums ripen in mid-September. They are small, and have a sweet dry flesh and a flavoursome tangy skin, This makes them ideal for traditional plum tarts, as they release very little liquid when cooked. They are also suitable for drying.
The flesh is a bright yellow colour and the stone comes away cleanly.
Quetsche d'Alsace is easy to grow. The flowers are self-fertile, and appear very late in the plum blossom season, making this variety a good choice for areas where late spring frosts can be a problem.
The tree has some resistance to most of the infections of plum trees, and becomes productive from an early age. It does best in a sheltered situation, in full sun.
