Gek hybrid plum trees

Prunus x
  • Picking season: Early
  • Self-fertility: Partially self-fertile

Gek is a modern hybrid or inter-specific plum. The plums are relatively large, and ripen early in the plum season. They have a bright green-yellow skin and have a sweet soft flesh.

Gek has a complex parentage including Japanese, Chinese, and Siberian plum species. As a result it is particularly cold-hardy and makes a good choice for growers in northern Europe. It also benefits from the productivity typical of Japanese plums.

Growing and Training

Gek fruits from a young age, and is partially self-fertile. It can be pollinated by other hybrid plums, and by Japanese plums (Prunus salicina). It flowers too early to be pollinated by European plums (Prunus domestica).

Gek is cold-hardy and the blossom has some frost-resistance.

History

Gek was developed in Russia in the 1990s.

More about hybrid plum trees

Hybrid or inter-specific plums make an interesting addition to the home orchard. The European plum (Prunus domestica) and Japanese plum (Prunus salicina) are perhaps the best known of the fruiting plum species, but there are many others, and numerous natural hybrids between these species. Man-made plum hybrids have been popular since the 1960s and typically aim to marry the productivity and flavours of European and Japanese plums with the rustic qualities of other species. The Siberian plum (Prunus ussriensis) for example can bring excellent cold-hardiness to a hybrid variety.
