Sanguine de Wismes is a red-fleshed dessert plum. It is an unusual hybrid between the European species (Prunus domestica) and the Japanese species (Prunus salicina). In most respects it resembles the Japanese parent, particularly with its red flesh which is typical of Japanese plums and not found in European plums.
Sanguine de Wismes flowers very early in the spring - like most Japanese plums. It is self-fertile, but probably not a good pollination partner for other European plums.
The plums also ripen early, typically in mid-July. As with most Japanese plums they are best for eating fresh rather than cooking.
